5 songs when you're down

i am generally a pretty smug bitch (fortunately? unfortunately?). but whenever i'm going through anything remotely difficult or feel a little spiritually, emotionally, mentally low, i always cue these songs up back to back and i'm ok again. i hope that you can enjoy them too.

  1. i am by baby tate ft flo milli: when baby tate says i am protected, well respected, i'm a queen, i'm a dream i feel it in my soul. it's been my hype song for the last four years.

  2. welcome the pressure by sir sly: i found sir sly at a difficult time in my life and the band and their music felt personal for quite a long time. they broke away from their label a few years ago but landon still makes gorgeous, honest, aching music under sly jr. welcome the pressure, in particular, is a song i listen to whenever i need to work through something, like it's ok, you're ok. pressure is a good thing. you're going to come out better.

  3. daffodil days by oscar: i'm often reminded of this [fader interview] (tab:https://www.thefader.com/2015/01/12/london-baritone-oscar-premieres-daffodil-days) where Oscar said he was having a bad day and was texting his friend and difficult autocorrected to daffodil. that makes me smile and brings me a lot of calm.

  4. so good by destiny's child: this song is incredibly cunty (*all the things i'm doin' that you thought i never could/i want you to know that i'm doin' so good) and i love it. i want to know beyonce's state of mind when writing this. i listen to this at least once a week.

  5. 末世紀的呼聲 by nicholas tse (謝霆鋒): i always saw this song as the ultimate bittersweet, subversive, resistance song. a messy protest to societal norms, self destruction, desperate need to live authentically. the ending lyrics 到最後回望這生 我也活過 (in the end, looking back on this life, i still lived) just feel so defiant, honest, and intimate. i think about this often as a promise to myself.
